I think that this woman deserved this. you will find no braver mother than this these days . i admire her for her courage and bravery for fighting off the robber and crime from her life. Well fought ..........congrats

WELL DESERVED: President George Maxwell Richards, left, and Humming Bird Gold Medal recipient Dianne Avalone Baptiste following the National Awards ceremony at President’s House, St Ann’s, last night. Baptiste was awarded for her bravery in fighting off a bandit who attempted to rob her recently.

“I will do it again.”

These were the words of Diane Baptiste yesterday, after she received a national award for gallantry for fighting off a gunman in defence of her daughters.

Baptiste was all smiles as she received the Humming Bird Medal (Gold) from President George Maxwell Richards at the National Awards Ceremony at President’s House, St Ann’s.

Dressed elegantly in a black and white ensemble, Baptiste received a round of applause as the medal of honour was pinned on her. She also received commendation from Prime Minister Patrick Manning and other dignitaries present, among them Government Ministers Colm Imbert, Kennedy Swaratsingh, Martin Joseph and Paula Gopee-Scoon. Acting Commissioner of Police (CoP) James Philbert was also present.

Just three weeks ago, Baptiste, a housewife, fought off the gunman who tried to enter her house. She also played a key role in the capture of the criminal.

Last night, she exuded confidence and advised that all parents stand up for their children. “Stand up for what’s right. Your children are first and foremost so come what may, you are going to have to put youth best foot forward,” she said.

Baptiste said children need to be educated from young so they do not turn to a life of crime. “These guys need to be educated. You need to instil good values in your children from an early age. If you don’t have good values what do you expect them to project?” she said.

She was still a bit a angry when asked about the incident, “I was not afraid of him. I was mad. You can’t just invade my privacy.”

She added, “Parents, your children and family come first. Do whatever you have to do to protect them. I will do it again if I have to, no two ways about that.”

Baptiste’s mother told the Express she was very proud of her daughter.

“Sometimes you have children and you never know what happen. I am proud of her,” she said, adding that she thinks prayer and God gave her daughter strength to do what she did.

Martin Luther King award for MARLENE MAHIPAT......
A HARDWORKING Trinidadian living in the United States (US) was honoured with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Content of Character Award on January 18. Dr. Marlene Mahipat, a chiropractor, who migrated to the US several years ago, was honoured with the award by the Baltimore County Content of Character Awards which was held at Mt. Calvary AME Church in Towson. She founded two non-profit organizations – Helping Orphans Prosper Everywhere (HOPE), which serves disadvantaged families, children; and People Letting Every Animal Survive Euthanization (PLEASE), which helps low-income people who might otherwise surrender their pets. Dr. Mahipat received the award in honour of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr......

She was nominated for the award because the way she treats people and for embodying the spirit of Dr. King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. Dr. Mahipat, it was found, consistently puts the needs of people as well as animals, ahead of her own.She left Trinidad with US $300, two suitcases and the phone number of a friend in 1990 and migrated to the US. She had many struggles, which included working three jobs and going to school full time. Throughout all of the struggles, she was always involved in charity work and always found a way to give, even when she had nothing for herself. Despite running her own successful practice as a doctor, she devotes much of her time and resources to helping others. She is a weekly volunteer delivery person for Meals on Wheels......

During the holidays she provides toys and meals for many needy families in the Baltimore area. At the beginning of each school year she provides backpacks filled with school supplies for needy children in urban areas, at homeless shelters, and many times right on the streets. Additionally, she brings healthy nutritional bagged meals bi-weekly to the homeless. P.L.E.A.S.E., the animal foundation focuses on helping healthy animals from being put to sleep. Dr. Mahipat also helps elderly, disabled and low income people with food and vet bills for their pets.........

she really deserves this award ... such a wonderful caring human being who dedicates her life to doing good..
