Very early estimates from Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood. She's the only one that gives box office results this early (published after midnight Saturday morning), so they're bound to be off by a few million when officials come in. Her estimates are just to give you an idea of what track the opening films are on. Here are the early Friday estimates:
1. How To Train Your Dragon (3D) - $13.5M. Est Weekend - $47.5M.
2. Alice in Wonderland (3D) - $6.2M. Est Weekend - $22.5M.
3. Hot Tub Time Machine - $4.5M. Est Weekend - $13.5M.
4. The Bounty Hunter - $4.2M. Est Weekend - $12.5M.
5. Diary Of A Wimpy Kid - $3.1M. Est Weekend - $11.5M.
How To Train Your Dragon opens well and will have good legs. I saw it last night (Friday) in 3D and it was fantastic. Beautiful animation and strong storyline and characters. Alice is still showing on about 35% of the 3D screens available so Dragon wasn't able to open as big as it could have been, which is shame, because it is so much better than Alice. Next week 3D screens will again be shared with Clash of the Titans which will hurt Dragon even more. Word of mouth will help but the glut of 3D movies is ironically making the only REAL 3D movie suffer. Alice and Clash were both converted to 3D after production, which is not nearly as good as being filmed in 3D.
Alice stays surprisingly strong and its total will climb to almost $300M after the weekend. Hot Tub Time Machine is slow out the gate and will miss expectations by miles. It was predicted for $25M OW. It will only make half of that. Bounty Hunter holds up after a soft opening last week to save face. Diary of a Wimpy Kid on the other hand plummets on Friday. It will recover due to Saturday matinees but competition from Dragon is killing its box office after a great start last week.
