A police constable with a long career went to court yesterday charged with the rape of a 17-year-old girl.
PC Roopwan Singh is 53 years old and on pre-retirement leave.
But he was given a privilege reserved for magistrates and courthouse officials at the San Fernando Magistrates' Court. He was allowed to stay in the courtroom during the lunchtime break and left the building using a staircase used by judicial officers.
It is alleged that Singh raped a girl on a gravel road in Debe two Saturdays ago. He was questioned by police last Monday and yesterday appeared before Second Court Magistrate Melville Daniel.
The charge, that Singh had sexual intercourse with the teen without her consent, was laid indictably and he was not asked to plead.
Singh, who was granted bail while in police custody, is to reappear on February 4 before First Court Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington.
Sgt Wendell Fernando is prosecuting.
