Trinidad has several four-lane highways and one highway...road quality decreases quickly on secondary roads, Rural roads are narrow and often have deep drainage ditches on either side. Some are in poor repair, and are frequently congested. Night travel should be avoided other than on major highways. Roadside assistance exists, but is limited and may be subject to lengthy delays. The Beetham Highway, a main thoroughfare in and out of the city, is dangerous if your vehicle has broken down. If your vehicle is still drivable you should get out of the area before seeking help. On the Beetham stretch, there are regular incidents of persons running out into the road or throwing debris at cars – including masonry bricks – for the purpose of causing accidents and forcing cars to stop, whereupon a group of accomplices then descend upon the accident victims, robbing them of valuables, and often violently assaulting them, even if they are compliant. Elsewhere in Port of Spain, especially in Laventille, a growing number of “bump and rob” incidents have been reported, in which the perpetrator rear-ends the victim, often causing only minor damage. When the victim emerges from d car, dey r then robbed of valuables, and possibly even yuh car. Some of these incidents have turned fatal, even when the victims are compliant. If you are involved in an accident in Laventille or on the Beetham Highway, if your car still drives, you should get out of the area, and get to a safe location before seeking help or assistance. The Ministry of Works and Transport is responsible for road conditions and safety in the country. Emergency ambulance services exist but may take prolonged amounts of time to reach the site of an accident and may not provide service in rural areas!!!

Security cameras and crash barriers are among the measures in a massive road safety campaign, the Ministry of Transport has announced. In a release...Transport Minister Devant Maharaj repeated his warning that a motor vehicle is a potential weapon in the hands of motorists..“If not handled with due care and attention, it can cause injury or death to passengers,” he said....Maharaj urged drivers to exercise utmost care and attention on the nation’s roads. He said he intends to approach Cabinet to release funding for a massive road safety campaign to reduce the carnage on the nation’s roadways...also Justice Minister Herbert Volney is calling for driving bans, increased fines and traps for drivers who exceed the speed limit. He said it’s time for a punitive remedy for the out-of-control road carnage as appeals to motorists to drive safely seem to be falling on deaf ears!!!

ROAD SAFETY: The United Nations World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is usually celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in November annually....
On Sunday 18th November 2012, Arrive Alive will be heading the day's events by erecting three "Remembrance Walls". On these walls, families who lost loved ones on the roadways of Trinidad and Tobago can stick photos, light candles, place flowers, anything
they wish to do in memory of their loved one. Families can go there at any time during the day and evening.
The locations are as follows:-
San Fernando- Harris Promenade (close to the City Hall's side)
Chaguanas- Saith Park
Port-of-Spain- the area around the Grand Stand

Road safety is very important, you cannot take it lightly. A road accident can end your career and also your life.

I think there should be more efforts from government to ensure people take road safety seriously.

Every year, we see some crazy road accidents.
