Three films go wide this week at Trinidad cinemas and they're all heavily anticipated by their core demographics.

Opening today, Wednesday 10th, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is yet another franchise hoping to cash in on the Harry Potter crowd. Narnia had limited success, Golden Compass and others failed miserably.

Percy Jackson is about a young boy who recently discovers he is the son of Poseidon and has become the prime suspect in the disappearance of Zeus' lightning bolt. With the sudden disappearance of Percy's mother, he and his friends embark on a cross-country adventure to catch the true lightning thief, save his mom, and unravel a mystery more powerful than the gods themselves.

Early reviews are solid, so kids and parents alike should be very happy. Personally, it doesn't look too bad so I might check it out.

Also opening Wednesday 10th, 3 Idiots is an Indian film that recently became the highest grossing Indian film of all time, due to record breaking grosses in India and across the globe for an Indian release.

3 Idiots follows two friends as they go on a journey to find their long-lost friend. Along the way, the men share the best memories they've had together and get into the most impossible of situations.

Reviews have been very positive and should give current Indian favourite Dulha Mil Gaya some strong competition.

Opening Friday 12th, Valentines Day brings a plethora of stars to the big screen a la He's Just Not That Into You from last year. Arguably bigger and with the help of its namesake holiday this weekend, it should do extremely well. I know many female friends who want to see this movie badly.

The film follows a diverse group of Los Angelenos as they navigate their way through romance and heartbreak over the course of one Valentine's Day.

Critics have ravaged the film so far, but with this type of pic, it doesn't really matter.

Who's going to the movies this weekend?

Dude this sounds wicked hope its not childish like harry potter, But producers are making a good move in making movies out of the Greek mythology

Haha...Harry Potter childish?! When was the last time you saw one of the movies? HP has actually been a pretty dark since Azkaban aka HP3, and the direction has been more mature and intelligent. You should check it out.

I actually believe Percy Jackson will cue much younger, simply because it is a new franchise and kids are the easiest to be targeted for some mainstream fare. They don't want to alienate anyone early on until they establish a fan base. If the guy who stars as Percy Jackson does get cast as Spider-man in the upcoming reboot like a lot of rumours are saying, the sequel would play huge.

yep it would.. I am really looking forward to see the Lightening Thief when its based on Greek or any Sci Fiction mythology. Hope to see it Saturday with admin. we will tell you how it went

I dont like Harry Potter so I prefer Percy Jackson to be a breakout hit and give some variety in the fantasy genre. It looks like Vs Day is doing whats expected with an projected 60 million 4 day weekend. Percy Jackson is not slacking either with a projected 50 million. The US has two holidays this weekend so the estimates are expected to be close. 3 idiots is really that good. Check it out in movietowne central. lol.

I saw Percy Jackson. It was alright. It wasn't very good, but it wasn't bad either. Definitely not as good as Harry Potter. Sorry RauCous :p

But it is doing very well at the box office, actually the best for a fantasy film other than Harry Potter since the first Chronicles of Narnia movie. So congrats to them and to Fox who has had many would-be franchises fail before releasing Percy. Percy will outgross V'Day because it will have better legs while V'Day will be very frontloaded. Both will still do well though.

Valentines day was bull crap seriously i went movie towne to see it with karina but it was crap. Yes their was alot of stars acting in it but it did not have a direct story line because they were keep on switching to to all the stars so it was confusing. It was even more lame when every one in the ending came out having a happy ending meaning it was like expected

Yeah me and admin got bored seriously..its for 13yr olds the movie was really a disappointment

Yeh, I had that too! Not much of a plot line, just tons of big actors. Heard Julia Roberts got paid $3M for the movie and she was only in it for 6mins. WOW. I'll probably watch it on DVD sometime.

It did really well at the US box office, over $66M for the President's Day holiday weekend. Percy made around $38M over the four days.

It was a holiday gimmic lol it'll crash next week lol

It's actually not that hard to picture considering, it opened well on Friday but then got a Saturday boost, when it would've generally declined a bit, and then got a huge spike on Sunday because it was Valentines Day AND that the next day was President's Day in the US, so most people didn't have to work on the Monday. So people went out to the movies on Sunday more than they usually would have. Therefore, a week later, with Sunday just being a normal day plus having work the following Monday, it saw a huge 80% decrease from the previous Sunday which rounded out an overall decline of 70% over the weekend.
