Nurses have been protesting all over the country for higher wages and expected back pay. Last time the Nurses in the Port Of Spain General Hospital had a protest where they walked out on the job or took a sick in protest of higher wages and working conditions. This week Nurses held a protest at the Sando General Hospital just as Fuad Khan was opening the new Nephrology Center demanding money. The way they described the protest scene was "more active than a Jouvert band'.
I was speaking with some coworkers and they were saying that they have never saw nurses in history of T&T have these kind of active protest and that the behaviour of the staff was not called for. Even when Police Officers were protesting the other day (who have a longer court case than Nurses)have never acted the way they did or sicked out on their work.
In my opinion, i agree that they should be paid, but we are a third world corrupted country. Everyone knows that. Nurses play an important role in health care after all but these are lives we are talking about. They took an oath to help save lives . Why sick out and have sick humans depending on a nurses' care? Many know that before they signed to enroll in Nursing school that the occupation is underpaid, they would have to work in deplorable conditions and work the hell out of themselves, so why are they surprised now?? This is expected! So don't sick out or stay away from work because of this. It was happening long before many of them entered the field.
Just like Teachers and Police Officers before they applied, it is widely known to all, that the occupation is underpaid, long working hours, infrastructure needs updating, etc etc. Yet they still went through. This is Trinidad and i have lost hope in my country that it will change now.
