They need to do something fast otherwise the back up of the water can spread germs really fast .

THE labour ward of Port of Spain General Hospital's maternity wing was flooded out yesterday.

According to an inside source, when staff reported for duty yesterday morning, the entire ward was flooded out, with water apparently coming from the ceiling.

One of the seven cubicles set aside for women in childbirth was abandoned because of the flood problem, the source said. The flood waters flowed through the general corridor, and also affected the kitchen, pantry and offices in the ward, the source added.

Staff was forced to use the hospital's linen in an effort to stop the water from spreading. Furniture was also moved around to prevent any damage to them. Plumbers were called in and the rising water eventually subsided around lunchtime, the source said.

"It was quite disturbing, imagine a patient who was scheduled to undergo a C (Caesarean) section had to be pushed through the water. Staff contemplated holding an umbrella over her," the source told the Express.

But the source revealed that this sort of leakage has been plaguing the hospital for some time now.

"It is a regular occurrence. Last month it happened also. They only doing patch work. The management is not addressing the problem at the root. It will come up again," the source said.

The source said no one in authority tried to appease either the staff or the patients following the incident.

"Everybody want to sweep it under the carpet. No one came to say what is happening," the source said.

Several attempts to contact communications manager of the North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA), Debbie Ann Bailey, proved unsuccessful yesterday.

I think the water might have beat in from the rain but tell me this. Maternity wards have to be very clean because it have babies there right? So when the nurses knew water was coming in last month why didn't they act fast to stop it before it happened again now they had to risk somethings again and now get it fixed

BABIES at the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit at the Women's Hospital in Mt Hope had to be transferred to the general hospitals at Port of Spain and San Fernando yesterday after a water pipe burst and flooded the unit.....a water line did burst wen the water pressure rose to twice its normal highest allowed pressure and the unit had to be evacuated with premature babies being transferred to San Fernando and Port of Spain, Tuesday night the ceiling collapse but an official at the hospital denied this....

AGAIN BOIII!! Gosh if the facility is old and it needs structural improvements then fix the god dam thing one step at a time nah. its the future at risk here and the government need to allocate much of their resources to help the health sector cuz a healthy population leads to development

I was about to read this story and then I stopped..Just the headline alone is ridiculous!..2011 folks and this happening in the "General hospital"!? ..The Government really need to get their priorities straight!..Instead of all the fancy art centers and all the other things that they constantly waste money on..How about a descent hospital for the citizens of TNT?

Its an continuing thing if you look at the first first post on this topic it date was 2009 and now another water problem at the hospital, why are these things not being dealt with, people lives are being affected you know people should start suing the state for these ridiculous events that could be avoided

THE HEALTH SECTOR IS THE NO1 KEY TO DEVELOPMENT IN TRINIDAD & YET STILL THEY BUILDING A ART CENTER IN SANDO & STADIUMS STEUPS! They say we health sector good ? WHY DOES MANNING GO TO CUBA THEN?

d maternity ward at d san fernando gen hospital was shut down yesterday bcoz of the number of pregnant women turning up at the Maternity Department of the San Fernando General Hospital to deliver babies has strained the ability of the understaffed unit to cope....Chairman of the South West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) Dr Lackram Bodoe said during the months of August and September, there was a higher number of births.....he said there are 70 beds in the maternity department including eight delivery beds....and some days there is overcrowding with regard to beds for the post Caesarean-section patients... the shift worked by nurses and doctors was eight hours and there were four teams of doctors, each led by a consultant working in the Maternity Department an there were sufficient doctors an to handle the workload....he said its a seasonal surge....ah waander if he tell ppl wen to hav babies or is it carnival babies....wat does dat mean...do we hav ah baby boom!!!

Meera Maharaj, 30 yrs was hospitalised at Mt Hope Maternity Hospital last week after learning her 9 month-old foetus had died in her womb....She delivered the foetus last Saturday....An autopsy was performed on the foetus, whom the family named Celine...Celine died because of "rhesus incompatibility"...Maharaj has the blood type O-negative, while her foetus was A-positive. Because of the blood incompatibility, the mother's body produced anti-bodies against the foetus's blood type, resulting in its death....injections were supposed to be administered to the mother to prevent complications in the pregnancy because of the blood incompatibility.....she was told her foetus was well, after a review at the clinic....However last Wednesday, she was told the foetus had died....Maharaj was sent home but returned to the hospital on her family's insistence. She was admitted to the ward after sleeping on four chairs due to the lack of bed space!!!
