There are fewer criminal gangs now in Trinidad and Tobago than there were at the start of this year.

Minister in the Ministry of National Security, Donna Cox, revealed yesterday that there were now an estimated 81 gangs in operation in Trinidad and Tobago.

National Security Minister Martin Joseph, in January of this year, had stated that there were 86 gangs in the country.

Cox, in answer to a question, disclosed in the House of Representatives yesterday that the police found that most gangs consisted of 10 to 30 members. However, she added, there are a few gangs which comprise as many as 50 members. She said the average age of gang members ranged between 14 and 44 years.

When Joseph gave his figures earlier this year, he said there were 86 gangs with an average membership of 15 to 20, suggesting potentially 1,720 gang members. This was a significant hike from 2005, when there were some 66 gangs, involving 500 persons, he had stated.

Yesterday, Cox said the Police Service and law enforcement had strengthened initiatives aimed at reducing the number of gangs and gang-related murders. She said consideration was being given to enacting legislation prohibiting the formation of and membership in criminal gangs, as obtains in other countries.

Cox said as the agency assigned specific responsibility for inhibiting the formation of gangs and curbing gang-related activities, the Inter-agency Task Force (IATF), working in conjunction with the Defence Force, had deployed forces into areas known for gang-related activities to undertake intelligence-based operations. In addition to frequent conducting of road checks, raids and searches, the IATF had intensified the number of foot and mobile patrols, she added.

She said the Special Anti-Crime Unit of Trinidad and Tobago (SAUTT), Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service, Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, IATF and intelligence units, were all working collaboratively to devise and implement new and creative strategies to reduce and eventually eliminate gang formation and operation in Trinidad and Tobago.

Among the specific measures undertaken to deal with the prevalence of gangs are: establishment of four police/army posts in the Morvant/Laventille and Port of Spain areas-Fort Picton, Fort Chacon, Charford Court and Jusamco Base; conduct of joint police and army patrols in the Bagatelle and Richplain areas; recall of law enforcement officers from vacation leave; fast-tracking of pending cases of gang members and the relatives; increase in identification of gang members and mapping of gang territories; increase in intelligence-sharing among law enforcement units; increase in resources and strength for Pride in Gonzales Project.

Could you imagine the stupidy of our ministers. How do they know that their are exactly 81 gang groups in T&T if they know why have they not arrested them, they are bringing out a bill stating that how if you join a gang its a crime.
How did they get this info about their are 81 one gang groups plus the more stupidly they state that how it reduced for 86 to 81. And they know the numbers in the groups

People please tell me why have nothing being done about them if the government knows these groups.

They may know the group, the leader. the members, the location BUT if they don't have proof of them committing an offence, they cannot lock them up...

Yea but why do they regulate the area where they live with police presence and track their movements i find this very nae ave of them

They cant count i guess... now any punk or wannabe who packing think they is gangsta and rollin with de crew.. them is gangs too. I even find them more dangerous than the drug lord type cuz ones like that does overdo it and do all kinda ballsness just to feel they is man... the organised crime type only care about there business and rep but these new guys seriously mental

True....just because police dont see anyone commiting the crimes and hearing about such gangs anymore that does not mean that there are fewer gangs...It have real gangs out there u does just dont see them commiting the crime to lock them up

So mr minister if their so called fewer gangs how are their an increase in crime, why are you fooling the people in T&T Mr so called security minister.
You only know how to talk shit on the Television

I don't think it have a day pass that don't have a murder in either the areas of Laventille, Morvant, Carenage ... the hold of Trinidad... alot is gang work...There was a situation in Carenage where each street are rule by gangs.... No one can enter these street without being harassed by these guys... Jus now we can't go no where...

These are the kind of statements from our ministers that are clearly showing us that they don't know anything what going on in crime. Its very disappointing when he says that drugs are the main reason for crime which is not true

Im sure the government knows whats happening in crime... We cross 100 for this year already in deaths....Alot has to do with gangs so there is no decrease in gangs....

I was told personally from a girl from Laventille that the gang there tackle the young boys and girls to sell there weed in schools..... and this is how its starts off.... To my surprise, some didn't bother while others who wants the brands, image, fast money took the offer.... And when the gany do robberies, they give the young one's part of it... Of course the parents know about this tooo but when the police comes and asked about this, they simplily neglect to tell the truth.... There family are also protected by these gangs....

Children who are the key to our furture are daily being crooked by the gangs ..... So please, parents... parents to be..... monitor, learn, the right way for your children's sake...

these days the police force are tackling the upper part of Picton, laventille....Imagine people from that area are saying they fraid to stay outside because if yuh have something on yuh or not they (police) beating yuh up... Also the villagers are saying that the police are carrying them the others area for the other gangs members to beat them up.... I feel sorry for the people in Picton but still heartless for the criminals too

From what i heard on the news this morning was that the leading cause of crime is gang related and police can't solve anything because there are no leads and people are scared to bear witness and also that the crime rate doubled since this same time period from last year and the year before that so they need to really let the people know what's going on instead of trying to soothe everything because they're putting people in even more danger.

No matter how much you may talk to someone to be a withness to a crime, to give evidence, they will not do it... They are scared to come forward ... They are scared for there family and there selves...

that just info for d world news, last night 2 more gun down, police are askin gangs to do jobs for them cuz dey dont want ppl to talk bout wat d area police doin wrong!!!

I guess thats y they lock down the Beetham Gardens this morning .... Whoever kill those guys last night hiding in the Beetham ....

Everythin goes on in the beetham. Even people who don't belong there hide there when they do their crimes. Police should set up a mobile patrol there i think it would help alot

While i do believe that the some officers are victimizing them, the part about the police carrying them to other areas of rival gangs, is a load of hog-wash. They should be ashamed to use that as an excuse. If yuh wasn't part of a "gang" to begin with, yuh would not be afraid of "rival" gangs. So they have to come better than that. While not "everybody" in the area partake in criminal activities; alot of them do. Even the ones that you see on tv talking bout how they're victimized. The so-called "community leaders" are in fact "gang-leaders" and members. So they have to come better than that. Gimme a dam break.!

People in these areas cannot complain about being victimized. i saw alot of people on tv talking about how police have no right to search them and stuf but it is part of their jobs and if it is a crime area then all they have to be worried about is letting police find the criminals so they can have a safe neighbourhood
