7 finalists for Extempo
Dion Diaz, Black Sage, Lingo, Contender, Myron B, Hezekiah Joseph and Brian London emerged out of a pack of 20 on Monday and challenge Lady Africa for the Extempo crown in 2013......
The preliminary round of the Extempo competition came off at Kaiso House, Queen's Park Savannah, Port of Spain on Monday night before an appreciative audience.....
Recently crowned San Fernando Extempo Monarch Abebele did not make the cut while the man he beat to win the title (Hezekiah Joseph) qualified for the national final......
There were 5 newcomer in the original 20- Wendell Goodridge, Omari Ashby, Fedor Honoure, Colin Lawrence and Christopher Mc Williams......
They all performed four verses to topics like "It Better to have a Wife", "Plenty Security but No Security", "Designate a Driver for Carnival", "The Judges can't Judge", "Skinner Park-the Acid Test", "THA Elections", "Carnival is Bacchanal", "All Men fraid Horn", "Woman on Top" and "Wayne Kublalsingh".
In the first round Black Sage had it easy as he picked "The Extempo Crown is Mine", also doing well was Dion Diaz with "The Judges can't judge" and Abebele with "Same—Sex Marriage".
The hit or joke of the night was Colin Lawrence who chose the topic "Wayne Kublalsingh". From the onset he said he did not know anything about the topic and had to go back and read the newspapers.
Lawrence showed guts and grit and finished his four verses to loud cheers from the audience. Several singers missed or did not understand the topic they chose and went down flat.
12 singers were chosen for the second round......But it was Black Sage and Abebele who had the audience in stitches with their topic "A Deputy Essential".
The Extempo final comes off on February 4 at the Queen's Park Savannah.
