Two illegal immigrants and another man were held by police at a house in Princes Town yesterday after two firearms were found.
The trio was held in a crackdown by Ste Madeleine police and San Fernando CID following reports of increased criminal activities in the area over the past week.
Southern Division police reported that between last Monday to yesterday morning, 102 people were arrested for offences that included house robberies, shootings, possession of firearm and ammunition and two on murder inquiries. The seizure of the firearms in Princes Town yesterday brought the total amount in the Southern Division in the last week to 10.
In an exercise coordinated by Supt Yussuff Gafar, ASP Peter Ramdeen, Insp Don Gajadhar and Sgt Dale Ramroop, officers gathered information about the firearms and executed a search warrant at a house along Cipero Road. As they searched the rooms, they found an 18-year-old Venezuelan man and 25-year-old Venezuelan woman in the house along with the 29-year-old man.
Further searches yielded a Beretta pistol with 14 rounds of ammunition and a 16-gauge shotgun loaded with one round of ammunition.
They were arrested and taken to the San Fernando Police Station where officers were awaiting the assistance of an interpreter in order to question the Venezuelans. Police said the occupant of the house has several pending court matters for firearm-related offences.
