Three new releases go wide this week in Trinidad and again everyone should find something that appeals to them.
First up its Tim Burton's rendition of the classic, Alice In Wonderland. Of its many appeals, the one that will strike the most with Trinis is the 3D factor which made Avatar (among other things) a huge hit here. Avatar has grossed close to $616,000US ($3.88MTT) in TT alone. Add Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter to that list and a known story to the rousing visuals and you've got yourselves packed houses. If you're planning on seeing it in 3D this weekend, I suggest you go atleast two hours before your desired showtime and buy tickets.
I expect it to be rated PG, so it is family-friendly, although some scenes may be scary for kids. Early reviews are strong.
Next up is the cop-buddy comedy, Cop Out, which was formerly titled A Couple of Dicks. Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan co-star in a film about long time police partners who get caught up in a mission trying to retrieve very valuable sports memorabilia. Yeh, doesn't sound very comical and Willis is definitely getting old. Atleast he's making another Die Hard.
It is rated R in the US, so it should be around 14+ - 16+ here. Reviews are terrible, mostly based on it being very cliche and somewhat slow-paced but teens (especially males) might check it out if they think Alice is too childish.
Lastly, a film that should appeal to the more mature adults looking for dramatic fare, Extraordinary Measures stars Harrison Ford and Brendon Fraser as a father and a doctor trying desperately to find a cure for his son's illness at all costs. Its based on a true life story, like The Blind Side, but unfortunately is no where as good, or not nearly as successful. It bombed at the US box office, and shouldn't do much better here.
It should be rated PG, but reviews were bad with most critics saying it appeared very "made for tv".
Sorry for missing last week, especially when Shutter Island opened here. Martin Scorsese is one of my all-time favourite directors and Leo DiCaprio is one of my favourite actors! If you haven't seen the movie, check it out, its a great supernatural suspense/thriller.
My Name is Khan also opened, making it the third big Indian film of 2010 to hit TT cinemas. It reunites Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in a film about the perceptions of the Muslim/Hindu race and community and the discrimination they faced after the events of 9/11 in the US. It is earning very positive reviews and breaking box office records both in India and worldwide for an Indian film.
