Sir Ellis was laid to rest yesterday and they were many who mourned his death, however, his funeral was considered by unknown sources to be a big joke.. During the service members of parliament were seen to be laughing and joking around before the body came and it looked really shameful as many were mourning this great man and they couldn't even show an ounce of respect.
During the service things were left out like certain rituals they had written down on the ceremonial sheet that were undone and also Archbishop Gillbert said:
you would tell me this is how we show respect to an important man in our country who love and dedicated his life to serving our country and making things better.what a shame indeed
During the service things were left out like certain rituals they had written down on the ceremonial sheet that were undone and also Archbishop Gillbert said:
“Now we move on to the Prayers of Intercession and since I am presiding here, I am not really sure what happens.†The podium was metres away from the casket. “So if I am supposed to get out of the way, I’ll do that. If I am supposed to do something, someone tell me.†After a few seconds, Archbishop Gilbert continued: “All right, so I am just assuming those who are involved with the Prayers of Intercession are aware of that...I invite you to begin to do your thing.â€ÂÂ
He then took his seat and after several moments a religious minister took the podium to begin the agenda item. Several minutes later, the audience was brought to laughter again when Archbishop Gilbert was conducting the Ritual of Commendation. On three occasions certain procedures listed on the official programme were not executed. Archbishop paused for a few moments expecting a lighted candle to be placed on Sir Ellis’ casket but after looking in that direction it did not happen. He also expected a dish containing earth and a bowl with water to be placed on the casket but those rituals were not completed.
After the service, sources who wished to remain anonymous, said it was very unfortunate that those incidents occurred during the state funeral. Sir Ellis was later interred at the Lapeyrouse Cemetery, after a procession through the streets of Port-of-Spain. Sources also complained of the lack of solemnity displayed by mourners at the graveside
