The Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources disclosed today that as part of the amended law, people with pet parrots and caged birds will now be required to apply for a license to keep the animals, which are now regarded as protected according to law.
The following is the Ministry's full statement and list of animals -
The Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources wishes to advise the public that in accordance with the recent amendment to the Conservation of Wildlife Regulations, animals which were previously listed in the Second Schedule of the Conservation of Wildlife Act are now categorised as protected animals.
With the present implementation of a two-year moratorium on hunting, the MEWR reaffirms there is a strict ban on the hunting or capture of these protected animals. However, under regulations 9 and 10 of the Conservation of Wildlife Regulations, provision is made for the issuing of permits for the possession and sale of protected animals.
These permits to possess protected species can be obtained from all Conservancy offices of the Forestry Division. A list of these offices is attached.
The application of the permitting scheme to animals formerly listed in the Second Schedule in the Conservation of Wildlife Act will allow for the capture of data on the population of these species in captivity. This forms an integral element of the overall baseline survey to be conducted during the moratorium period and will inform strategic planning for the sustainable management of our biological resources.
The MEWR reiterates its commitment to taking all steps necessary for the protection of our nation’s wildlife for the benefit of present and future generations.
