A 60-year-old man was on Friday found guilty of committing a sex act on a young woman 16-years-ago.

Deoraj Ramcharan was subsequently remanded into custody at the Remand Yard prison to await his sentence.

A nine-member jury, in the San Fernando Second Criminal Court, deliberated for about 15 minutes before finding him guilty on a charge of grievous sexual assault. The victim, then 18, and the mother of a six-month-old baby, went to Ramcharan’s 21st wedding anniversary celebration at his home. The victim knew Ramcharan and his wife very well.

According to the evidence led by state attorney Trevor Jones, the victim had about five drinks of White Oak rum with Ramcharan and his wife and she began to feel sleepy. Ramcharan’s wife told her to go into their children’s room and sleep. After 12 am the next day she awoke to a pain and saw Rambachan between her legs. Her pants and underwear were down. The victim ordered her uncle to move and pulled up her clothes.

When she threatened to tell her father, Ramcharan told her, “Go ahead no one will believe you.”

The victim said she felt embarrassed and even moved out of the area. Three days later her mother convinced her to go the police. She made a report to the Gasparillo Police Station on September 17, 2002. PC Wilkinson went to Ramcharan’s home on two occasions but did not meet him.

On September 20, 2002, Ramcharan went to the police station where Wilkinson told him of the report.

Ramcharan told the officer he was sorry for what he did to the victim. The officer made a note of his utterance and the accused signed it. Ramcharan then gave the police a written statement confessing to the crime. During the trial before Justice Hayden St Clair-Douglas Ramcharan denied giving the police a statement. He claimed the police forced him to sign the document. He was represented by attorney Ainsley Lucky.

The judge adjourned the matter to June 27.
