JACK'S WIFE HIT
Friend also hurt by missile thrown at UNC meeting
Carolyn Kissoon South Bureau
Friday, May 7th 2010

The wife of United National Congress (UNC) Chairman Jack Warner, Maureen, and her friend, Joanne Mora, were struck by a heavy object thrown into the crowd during the UNC’s campaign meeting in Couva last night.

The women were seated in the front row of an area cordoned off near the stage when the object, described as metallic and the size of a golf ball, was thrown.

Mora was struck on the left forearm. She was seated next to Warner, whose husband was on stage and witnessed the incident.

The incident occurred during the address of UNC Deputy Political Leader Dr Rudy Moonilal, and went unnoticed by many in the crowd.

However, police quickly intervened to question the women and dispatch officers to surrounding streets.

Maureen Warner said the object bounced off her leg before striking Mora.

’I did not see where it came from. I just felt something hit me and when I looked I saw something like a ball. Someone picked it up and placed it on the stage,’ Mora said.

The police were called in and the object seized. Several officers surrounded Mora, and party officials pleaded with her to seek medical treatment, but she refused.

Mora was then removed to a seat at the side of the stage.

Police believe the object came from outside the barriers, where dozens of officers were standing guard.

Jack Warner, who was next to take the podium, apologised to Mora.

’To the lady who was injured just now I want to apologise. I am sorry for what happened. We have to show some patience and courage and desist from this kind of behaviour,’ he said.

UNC Political Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar arrived shortly after the incident. She was surrounded by several security officers and entered through a secluded entrance, unknown to supporters.

This is Newsday's take on the story.

Woman struck at UNC meeting
By RICHARDSON DHALAI Friday, May 7 2010

JOANNE MORA holds ice to a bruise on her left shoulder after she was struck by a metallicobject which was thrown toward the main stage of the UNC meet...
A WOMAN was struck by a round metallic object resembling a ball bearing at the UNC’s public meeting at the Couva Main Road last night despite heightened security measures put in place by the party, which included tall wire barriers ringing the platform, plainclothes security officers and a large police presence from the nearby Couva Police Station.

Visibly shaken Arouca resident, Joanne Mora, who was sitting next to Maureen Warner, the wife of UNC chairman Jack Warner, in the front row directly before the platform was struck by what she described as a metallic object which was thrown over the wire barriers.

The object reportedly struck Maureen Warner, bounced off her leg before striking Mora on her upper left forearm resulting in a bluish bruise. Both women wore the trademark yellow T-shirts of the UNC.

In a brief interview, Mora said she did not know who threw the object and from which direction it was thrown and expressed disbelief at the incident. She was subsequently interviewed by police officers and returned to her seat in the front row before the podium.

Dr Stephen Ramroop, Head of the Accident and Emergency Department of the San Fernando General Hospital, was observed speaking to Mora and examined her bruise.

Meanwhile, the security measures at the meeting included the screening of persons entering the compound directly before the platform while security officers manned both entrances leading to the meeting.

During his address, Warner urged persons to desist from interrupting the meeting. Earlier this week, protesters disrupted a UNC meeting in St Joseph objecting to candidate Herbert Volney, a former High Court judge, over the Brad Boyce case.

On Wednesday, police began investigations into a report of a $5 million hit on UNC political leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar. In the PNM camp, Arouca/Maloney candidate Alicia Hospedales was doused with red paint after a walkabout on Tuesday. The police have stepped up security at political meetings.

What a way to end up the article now there's no way for the public to view these incidents as unrelated, even if they are proven to be unrelated by police.
