Eight-year-old Leah Sammy, who was reported missing two days ago, had not returned home up to late yesterday, police said.
Sammy was last seen leaving the Edinburgh 500 Government Primary School, where she is a pupil, on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said Sammy's mother called her cellphone around 5.30 p.m. and a man ordered that she pay $300,000 for her daughter's safe release. He promised to contact the family again, but up to late yesterday he had not called.
Relatives at her Tom Street, Longdenville, Chaguanas home were reluctant to speak with the media yesterday.
Police were also investigating reports that the schoolgirl was taken by a relative.
And in another incident, a 27-year-old mechanic, who was reportedly taken from a house in Couva by men wearing police uniform on Saturday, has not been found.
Relatives of Essa Shalto continued their search yesterday.
Couva police confirmed that a missing person report was filed, but officers were unable to give details on the case.
The Anti-Kidnapping Squad is continuing investigations.
