The new law allows hearsay evidence to be admissible in court in an attempt to lend support to the victim's case when she was the only person present in the attack. The amendment hopes to encourage more women to come forward because it is no longer their word against their accuser, but any one who they told about the incident after the attack can give evidence.

The problem is, Attorney General John Jeremie was intent of emphasizing "women and infants" only. When questioned about men, he responded: "I don’t know about men being sexually assaulted...Madam Deputy Speaker, I’ve been asked what about men, but I chose my words very carefully. I said women and infants, okay?"

Is Jeremie saying that men are not raped? Is Trinidad the only country in the world where men are not raped? If so that is amazing. This is the safest country to live in then if you are a male and afraid of being raped because it will never happen to you.

What is getting to me is when he says "I chose my words very carefully". Is he insinuating that if a man reports a rape, then most likely, it is not rape at all? In order words, NOT ONLY do men who are raped have to deal with the fact that they have been violated, but they also have to deal with the fact that their sexuality is being decided as GAY and that their involvement with another man was WELCOMED.

WHAT ARE THESE POLITICIANS THINKING?

OMG WTF!!! that's just disgusting!! I'm pretty sure when men not careful enough they find themselves being raped, i saw in the Newsday last week that men are pursuing and winning sexual harassment cases, even they gay ones. Rape being more of a violation how could Jeremie deny like every adult male, the right to seek justice. Does our country even have sexual harassment laws for men?
Why? do they think that every time a man is involved in a sexual act is because he asked for it?
Men in Trinidad and Tobago not THAT "thusty."

That just a retarded law. Made by retarded people.

Exactly. Nobody is safe from sexual abuse, man, woman or child so I don't understand why the government is discriminating against men, or not giving us as many rights.

It just goes to show the single-minded-ness (not actual word) of those who lead our country. It show a blatant disregard to 1. the victim 2. the fact that men are infact sexually assaulted and abused. 3. It show his pre-disposition on the matter that men are NOT at risk so the law does not cater for them.

What I can't understand is why the minister would want to cause problems for himself? How hard would it be to cover men as well? Why does the law go out of its way to exclude men? This would not be news if they just did the normal, expected and right thing.

Because it shows a deep seeded culture that men are not "supposed" to be victims of such things. It's totally ok to believe that real men don't go through such incidents. Its against the nature of being a man. It's a man's world after all. So they can't see past those deep-rooted culture. It's a global preconcept that we as men don't go through that. We're all macho and overflowing with such testosterone that our ego is the size of the savannah.

Too right bro. It seems the image of what a man is or should be has overrun our actual rights to protection. Looks like it is now the man's time to fight for equality.

Is that so stupid, the nerves of him to call him self a minister, I really don't want to talk about this so i will just say this one thing.

They Blasted don't even protect the rape victims, the offender get away nothing happens to them the police don't take on the rape victims (i' talking about females here eh) So wtf he talking about so asshole

Admin please watch your words cursing is not allowed in here...

All i can say is that men are not going to take this seriously.what does he think? that men are not victims? that this world is not changing where men don't want women anymore? John Jeremie should take a trip to the new world

Yeh, because instead of dealing with the problem, the police always judging people and coming up with their own theories beyond their capacity.

So what will happen if a man reported rape they might think he drunk or insane cuz a man cannot get rape in trini right! Yeah thats what they think

No, if he was raped by a woman, they will be like "what you gay? you don't like woman?", and if he was raped by a man, they will say "hmm..you gay and you wanted that."
