An iconic white dress once worn by Marilyn Monroe in a movie has sold at auction for $4.6 million.

The dress was featured in the film The Seven Year Itch and has been described as being a prop for one of the most

memorable cinema images of all time.

The dress is worn in the scene where Monroe stands on a subway grate, allowing the dress to billow above her knees.

The Seven Year Itch was released in 1955.

The white dress was part of a collection of film memorabilia sold at the auction on behalf of actress Debbie Reynolds, who has been collecting Hollywood memorabilia over the years.

The dress went to an anonymous bidder.
