Villagers of San Pedro, Rio Claro, are saying that the shooting of 52-year-old George Ashby on Friday night was a case of mistaken identity.
Rio Claro police said yesterday a gun was found in the vehicle which Ashby was driving.
The shooting has angered villagers who are calling for an enquiry into the matter "not by police officers but by a judge in the High court".
"We want justice, not police smokescreen," said Ashby's mother, Lucy Ashby.
She said the police have done a grave injustice not only to Ashby's family, but to law-abiding people living in a small and peaceful community.
She said relatives were intimidated by the police when they went to make enquiries about the shooting.
Ashby, a groundsman attached to Tabaquite Comprehensive School, was allegedly shot by police around 7.30 p.m. on Friday. (See Page 13)
He died on the spot after three bullets were pumped into his chest.
Ashby was returning to his home at San Pedro in a white car when police intercepted the car and allegedly shot him.
Marvin Fuentes, a villager, said Ashby was at a cook-out at the Tabaquite school between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. and was on his way home when he was shot.
An eyewitness to the incident told the Sunday Express yesterday that he saw a police officer drag the body into a police car.
Police said they found a grass-cutting machine, commonly known as a "wacker", in Ashby's car.
A post-mortem will be carried out tomorrow.
Meanwhile, police are continuing their investigations into what the villagers are calling "cold-blooded murder".
