We have seen this

"Join this group if you hate men that rape women"

"Join this group if you hate Women abuse"

"Join this group if you are for the cause"

"Join this group if you hate people who start house fires with families inside on a Sunday before 6pm and turn the water supply off under the stairs"

"Let's show our support for cancer victims by breaking the world record for chain smoking"

You joined the group, you eased your conscience, you did your bit, the world is just that little bit safer, give yourself a pat on the back.

Joining a facebook group for a serious issue is an empty gesture; nothing more than a self-righteous and self-congratulatory pat on the back, and a public declaration of how "socially conscious" you believe yourself to be, without any effort besides the click of a mouse.

I does be seeing alot of people fooling them selves when they join help the poor, Trinidad crime groups and groups related. Just because you join the group that does not mean you are benefiting anyone, your not changing anything just really fooling your self and add more members to that group

Well ok nah....*going and leave my groups now*.............lol.. kidding. I'm not really part of any groups per say... just one.

Lol but is it not true what i'm saying. People join groups to show others that they have concern about something.

As stated here

Joining a facebook group for a serious issue is an empty gesture; nothing more than a self-righteous and self-congratulatory pat on the back, and a public declaration of how "socially conscious" you believe yourself to be, without any effort besides the click of a mouse.

"a self-righteous and self-congratulatory pat on the back, and a public declaration of how "socially conscious" you believe yourself to be"...............so much big words

I ignore them too because what exactly is it doing the CAUSE... Its just raising the amount of fans to the CAUSE....

Well OP, I don't agree with you, it is a simple gesture just joining a group BUT I mean, support is support, even if it is silent support. What if, all these people decided to join a group called "I hate God" or "I love to rape women" even if they're not doing it, I'm sure there will be a problem. Come on, we need to look at it from other perspectives too. As long as the moral support is there, then what's to worry about?

Let's take the Haiti relief efforts for one...yeh I join a Relief group, and I donated a few cans but I prayed for these people too...just because I didn't hand over hundreds of dollars doesn't mean I don't care and doesn't mean that I feel self-righteous.

All these big stars who put on the relief telethon or who go to Africa and visit impoverished nations etc, its not cause they want to spend it there instead of Maui, but because it is good PR, and it creates a good image for them. But at the end of the day, if they are making a change for the better, and putting some rice in a child's mouth, does it really matter WHY they were doing it?

Let's think about that before we judge others. It is the greater good we're looking for here.

I don't believe that some do really care about it but the majority just want to show their friends that they have some dignity and compassion when they join a particular group.

For the majority its just to add to their group count because the "majority" don;t even read when the group is about they don't even read the mass emails and they don't take part in the group's discussion but the main reason they joined in the same reason i outlined in the first post

I agree with both admin as well as TFM... i say let bygons be bygons...

True. Every one has a right to their own opinion. Understand what the OP is saying, but just think otherwise.
