Five months after its erectionÂat the Hasely Crawford Stadium, the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Gary Hunt, has finally bowed to public opinion, conceding that the $2 million flag was a grave error.

In an address to the nation last night, which focused largely on the accomplishments of his ministry, Hunt admitted that while the idea of the flag was noble, it went all wrong ’in its implementation’. Furthermore, he gave an undertaking to the country that never would this happen again.

’My fellow citizens, although the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs continues to make great strides and has enjoyed considerable success, we have not always got it right. There have been a few missteps along the way and one of these has been the construction of a national flag at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. The proposal to erect a national symbol at a facility that bears the name of our only Olympic gold medallist was a noble one but there were errors in its implementation,’ Hunt said.

’We have heard the public’s concerns and have acted appropriately. I have since directed the Sports Company to adjust its systems and policies to ensure that nothing like this occurs in the future. A national flag should never become the source of conflict and controversy and I wish to assure the national community that it will not happen again.’

This is a major turnaround for Hunt, who, at a press conference held with senior members of the Sports Company in September last year, stoutly defended the decision to erect the flag. He said then that he had received tremendous support on his Facebook on the issue.

But in reality, the flag has never gone down well with the population and the matter has continued to provoke criticism and has even been the subject of negative comments in calypso.

Hunt’s shift in position also comes amidst a growing sense of unease within the PNM, having regard to what has transpired within the Opposition UNC and the emergence of Kamla Persad-Bissessar as a bright new star in the political firmament.

In his address, Hunt said it wasa clear that the country wasa on the verge of a golden era of sport in Trinidad and Tobago.

’The many successes that we have enjoyed in the last two years are just the tip of the iceberg and the best is yet to come,’ he said.

He said the ministry recently finalized a comprehensive and systematic plan for the future development of sport entitled ’The Way - Pathways to Sporting Excellence’.

’I am confident that this new plan will take Trinidad and Tobago to the highest levels of international sporting glory,’ he added.

Hunt announced that the Sports Commission would be established soon and that the ’highly successful Elite Athlete Assistance Programme’ would be expanded ’to include an even larger base of talented citizens’.

In terms of youth development, Hunt said Government intends to implement 48 more sustainable community youth programmes throughout the country this year.

Saying, however, that Government recognizes ’that more work needs to be done’, Hunt said, ’I wish to assure the national community that we shall not shirk this responsibility. Working together with communities, youth groups, schools, as well as our national sporting organizations, I have no doubt that we will scale even greater heights in the months and years ahead.’

I think that all who agreed to have this flag should be held accountable as well as those who approved it. $2million wasted when it could have been used to combat crime or assist the public with better roads or restore old water pipes for a better flow of water. I do not understand why it is so difficult to provide basic needs and so easy to approved unneccessary things that do not benefit us in this country. It is easy to say sorry but tax payers have lost again to impluse and to someone who thought this idea sounded good without thinking it through.

Just hope they don't end up saying s-o-r-r-y after building a smelter plant

Yuh aint see these people want licks... after all this time and uproar over the flag he "NOW" decide to come out clean on the issue??? steups!!!

Admin it's easy to say de money could have been spent on crime and health care, but remember from your time with us each ministry is allocated money which is to be spent on developing what ever they are responsible for. That 2million could have been spent on so many different thing lacking sportwise in this country.

For example we have one of the world fastest swimmers in george bovell an yet we don't have an 50metre pool. The nation pro league is in a mess, teams have to pull out because of poor infrastructure. Teams like North East Stars my home team, petrotrin and by next year calidonia AIA will all be unable to play in the league.

But u know what really sad about this situation, that idiot hunt and d rest of them only thinking million dollar stadium will solve the problem. If de ministry did pay one man to take care of north east ground it would have save them millions of dollars.

Ah really doh even want to think about the the national team ah want jack W to stop spending his money on the team an let the gov't step up

freal andre but first things first we need to up the standard of our heath facilities because no proper health will lead to death. and all this deaths will at least alleviate if things are put into place. Heath centers are needed in rural areas such as bieche because people does have to leave quite there to use Sangre Grande health facilities.

Hunt apologized an still was not chosen to run!!! UNC wouda have ah field day wit him on d hustings dis election
