A craving for a cup of corn soup cost Anand Jagdeo his life yesterday, after initially surviving a vehicular accident.

Jagdeo, who would have turned 39 today, died yesterday around 5 a.m. as he and his best friend Rishi Ramkissoon were heading to the Cow Heel Centre in Arima.

Both men lived a shot distance away at Orange Grove Trace, Pasea Extension.

Jagdeo's family said Anand, who was talking, was taken out of the Mitsubishi Galant motor car, now a mangled wreck, by fire officers "without a scratch". But moments later he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jagdeo's family believes that the asthmatic patient did not get his nebuliser on time and died as a result. Jagdeo, who worked as a custodian with the Airports Authority, leaves behind to mourn his ten-year-old daughter, Alina. The fatality pushed the death toll on the roads to 128.

Speaking with the Express yesterday, a sorrowful Soondar Jagdeo said that his son loved the game of cricket. This sentiment was echoed by his brother Ravi, who said Anand was a "talkative person" who made friends easily.

One of those friends was Ramkissoon, 25, the driver of the vehicle. Both Ramikssoon and Jagdeo's relatives denied that the men were drinking alcohol as they were both on medication.

Ramkissoon, a farmer, told reporters that he blames himself for the death of his friend who, while being trapped in the car, begged to be rescued.

"Everytime I close my eyes I seeing it. He father (Soondar) tell me not to worry 'bout it and don't blame myself, but deep down inside I feel like is my fault too," he said as he sat on a mattress at his home.

Ramkissoon said he lost control of the vehicle as he exited the Bailey Bridge, on the Churchill Roosevelt Highway in Macoya and crashed in a ditch at the side of the road, landing upside down on a concrete cylinder.

Ramkissoon, who jokingly described himself as Jagdeo's "horner woman" because they were regularly together whenever Jagdeo's girlfriend called, said that he managed to crawl out of the car.

Ramkissoon, who suffered a broken foot and had cuts on his left hand, added that Jagdeo, while trapped in the car, asked him what had happened and why he crashed because he (Jagdeo), knew that he (Ramkissoon) could have "handled it" driving fast or slow.

A fire officer, who was passing by, saw the accident and called for help. The fire officials arrived on the scene some ten-15 minutes later. Up until he was pulled out of the car, Jagdeo, according to Ramkissoon, was speaking with him, asking him to get him out.

While at the Mt Hope Hospital, Ramkissoon, who confessed to not having slept since Saturday, said that he heard of his friend's passing.

Ramkissoon's brother Rajin recalled being invited to go with the duo to get something to eat but opted to go for KFC instead.

To celebrate his friend's birthday, Ramkissoon made reservations at TGI Friday's for the two of them and their girlfriends. He added that his friend was planning to build a house, so when the time came he could have a place for his intended wife.
