Police yesterday intervened to remove a 21-year-old physically and mentally disabled woman left alone in a house in Preysal, Couva.

The woman was being treated last night at the San Fernando General Hospital.

She was taken there by paramedics who accompanied the police to Sesame Street, Preysal, at around 1.30 p.m. Police said no charges would be laid in the case. Instead, an appeal was made for help for the family.

The woman and her ten-year-old sister lived with their mother, a domestic worker, at an apartment rented at a cost of $1,200 per month.

The family receives a welfare grant of $1,300 a month and were regularly visited by social workers.

The disabled woman was found in a crib, and police said she was no more than 30 pounds (13 kg) in weight and appeared to have a skin ailment.

am am really disturbed by this woman's condition and family's trouble. i wish them the best and all the help they can get for this woman.

There's a pic of her in the express..She really looks like five years.... The mother is looking for a home for her but can't fine any... I feel sorry for the family but the woman did not ask to be like that.... Im sure there are people who are willing to help her take care of the girl.... Putting her in a home is jus not right...

i doubt she might get better treatment in a home, and then imagine how it wood be for her, not seeing the people shes been with for all her life, i don't think they should put her in a house either, but its just sad, the things that happen to people, i mean look at that, she's disabled and her family is struggling to support themselves :[

I know i felt really heartbroken to hear about this and the condition she was in. i hope the government can send some kind of fund to help her family take care of her

She's already getting $1300.00 per month ....(disability Grant) But the mother is saying thats not enough to support her... I don't think there is anything else the governement can do to help them... But they could give them a house so they can stop paying so much rent... Its true that the governement don't have much in place for disable individuals....

gd news....3,000 differently-abled persons to benefit from Govt projects...projects offered under the Ministry of the People and Social Development Access TT Programme Minister of the People and Social Development Dr Glenn Ramadharsingh disclosed yesterday..the TT card also called the automatic food card, Ezpass or free bus passes on PTSC buses, and $5,000 Human Development Scholarships (HDS) to assist in the development of certain skills...University student, Shamla Maharaj, who suffers from cerebral palsy was also the recipient of a $34,500 scholarship grant, approved by Cabinet....
