A 58-year-old contractor, who was on his way to pay workers at a job site, was ambushed by two men on Friday.
The two men-one armed with a gun and the other with a cutlass-ordered Yasim Mohammed to hand over the bag of cash; he refused.
Mohammed grabbed the gunman and tried to wrestle the gun from his hand. Several shots were fired, but no one was injured, police said.
The gunshots alerted workmen, who were at the job site along Craignish Road, Princes Town.
They ran to Mohammed's assistance. The incident happened around 5 p.m.
Police said the cutlass-wielding bandit ran away during the fracas, but his accomplice was pinned to the ground until police officers arrived.
The 23-year-old California man was taken into police custody and will appear before several identification parades.
A 9mm pistol and two rounds of ammunition were recovered.
Princes Town police are continuing investigations.
